Makams are formed by the addition of a pentachord and tetrachord to each other. Makams which are formed by the addition of a tetrachord to a pentachord and where dominant is the note in which pentachord joins with pentachord is called simple makam. Transposition is used frequently. Some makams are transposed on certain tones where they gain a new identity, and this is called as şed makam. While in a certain makam,using the scale of another makam is called as modulation. Compound makams are formed by these modulations gaining new identity.
